House rejects bill letting agencies refuse LGBT adoptions

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas House has rejected a bill that would have allowed adoption and foster care contractors to refuse placements to gay and lesbian couples based on religious grounds.

The Wichita Eagle reports that the House voted down the measure Thursday, hours after the state Senate approved nearly identical legislation. The bill now goes to a conference committee, where lawmakers from the House and the Senate will negotiate a final bill.

Young LGBTQ Nevadans ask lawmakers for change in foster care

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP)- Young adults formerly in Nevada’s foster care system told state lawmakers Monday that gay, bisexual, asexual and transgender kids would be safer if social workers are specially trained to help LGBTQ adolescents.

Speaking from experience, they said abuse that lands kids in child welfare facilities can worsen under state oversight, whether due to intolerance, negligence or assault.

Florida removes gay adoption ban, bill giving agencies a right to discriminate dies

Tallahassee – The Florida Legislature has moved two gay adoption bills through the 2015 session—one pro-LGBT, the other anti-LGBT—and both are racing to get to the governor’s desk and become law before the session ends.

On April 14, the Florida Senate passed the first of these bills, the Adoption and Foster Care bill (CS/HB 7013), by a vote of 27-11. The bill strikes outdated statutory language that bans gay people from adopting in the state of Florida.

Florida Senate Committee postpones vote on anti-gay adoption bill

The Florida Senate’s Rules Committee elected to postpone voting on the Conscience Protection bill (CS/HB 7111) after hearing two hours of testimony for and against the bill.

The committee chair, Sen. David Simmons (Altamonte Springs-R), continually asked for all speakers to be brief and to the point as “they had many people there who wanted to speak”.

Florida Senate passes bill to remove gay adoption ban

Tallahassee – The Florida Senate passed the Adoption and Foster Care bill (CS/HB 7013) with a vote of 27-11 which strikes the outdated language that prohibited gay people from adopting in the state of Florida.

The ban has been obsolete and unenforced since 2010, when it was ruled unconstitutional. The move to scrub the gay adoption ban language is part of a larger adoption bill that provides adoption benefits to state employees and incentive payments to community-based care groups. Of the 20 pages of bill language, just a single line applies to deleting the ban on adoption by gays.

Florida Senate set to vote on gay adoption ban amendment

Tallahasse, Fla. – House Bill 7013, titled “Adoption and Foster Care” bill, will go before the Florida Senate April 8. If the bill passes, it will finally remove the language of the state’s unconstitutional, obsolete ban on gay adoption.

Florida’s House of Representatives voted 68-50 to approve the bill March 11.

Anti-gay legislation moves through state, equality bills sit in committee

Tallahassee – Florida’s Legislature has been busy this year pushing through several anti-gay and discriminatory bills masked in the argument that they are to protect women and children.

The “Single-Sex Public Facilities” bill was introduced in the Florida House on Feb. 4 and would prohibit transgender individuals from using public facilities that align with their gender identities. While the bill does not use the word “transgender,” opponents of the bills say its sole purpose is targeting the transgender community.
