Chinese film festival pushes for end to gender inequality

BEIJING (AP) – In films, women and girls are much more likely to take off their clothes than male actors and to be scantily clad in the first place, studies show. Less than a third of speaking characters are female and men outnumber women behind the camera by a ratio of five to one.

Campaigners are highlighting this gender inequality in film at the China Women’s Film Festival that runs until Sunday in Beijing, arguing that the phenomenon distorts views of women and the world, and that the male-dominated film industry repeats the same mistakes out of habit.

Film festival hit ‘Moonlight’ chronicles life of young man growing up black and gay

TORONTO (AP) – The shimmering glow of Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight, a poetic coming-of-age tale told across three chapters about a young gay black kid growing up in a poor, drug-ridden neighborhood of Miami, has lit up this year’s fall film festival circuit like no other film.

Following its much-lauded debut at the Telluride Film Festival and at the Toronto International Film Festival, Moonlight has been received with an overflowing of emotion and acclaim. It’s an uncannily intimate portrait of a young man’s identity being formed, in fits and starts, both painful and beautiful, with profound reverberations about black America.

Film Submissions Open for This Year

Every year much of our favorite work comes from submissions. I sincerely hope you will submit your film to the festival committee and mark your calendar to attend this year’s Film Festival, September 30th – October 8th.

As in years past, TIGLFF is using the services of withoutabox.com for film submissions and this year we are also using Film Freeway. Theses sites will have all the details you need to submit a movie for consideration.

TIGLFF finds new home at the Palladium in St. Pete

TAMPA – The Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, or TIGLFF, announced on May 14 The Palladium Theatre in St. Petersburg will be the new home to the festival after 25 years in the Tampa Theatre.

The Palladium, which has hosted many of TIGLFF’s events in the past, will be the location for the festival’s opening weekend and closing night, as well as most of the big events during the nine days of festivities.

Billy and Alan screening at the Global Peace Film Festival
