Japan court upholds sterilization to register gender change

TOKYO (AP) | Human rights and LGBT activists on Jan. 25 denounced a ruling by Japan’s Supreme Court upholding a law that effectively requires transgender people to be sterilized before they can have their gender changed on official documents.

The court said the law is constitutional because it was meant to reduce confusion in families and society. But it acknowledged that it restricts freedom and could become out of step with changing social values.

European court: Russia’s ban on LGBT rallies violates rights

PARIS (AP) | The European Court of Human Rights issued a fresh rebuke to the Kremlin on Nov. 27, ruling that Russia’s continued ban on LGBT rallies is discriminatory and represents a violation of human rights.

Judges at the court based in the eastern French city of Strasbourg called on Moscow to introduce “systemic measures” to remedy the breaches to the European Convention of Human Rights that the Russian Federation became a signatory to in 1996.
