Joining the LGBT community in mourning the loss of Edith Windsor, Hillary Clinton made a surprise appearance during her memorial service Friday to honor the LGBT pioneer as someone who “helped change hearts and minds, including mine.”

During the ceremony at Temple Emanu-El in New York City, Clinton spoke at length about Windsor’s impact on America and her advancement of LGBT equality.

Obama on Edith Windsor: ‘Few made as big a difference to America’

Former President Barack Obama has issued a statement upon the death of lesbian activist Edith Windsor, saying “few made as a big difference to America” as result of her pursuit for marriage equality.

“America’s long journey towards equality has been guided by countless small acts of persistence, and fueled by the stubborn willingness of quiet heroes to speak out for what’s right,” Obama said. “Few were as small in stature as Edie Windsor – and few made as big a difference to America.”

Edith Windsor, lesbian activist who took down DOMA, dead at 88

Edith Windsor, a lesbian activist who was a pioneer for LGBT rights and brought down the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act, died Tuesday at age 88.

Judith Kasen-Windsor issued a statement Tuesday confirming Windsor’s death but didn’t disclose a cause. The two were married in 2016.

St. Petersburg – Google the name “Edith Windsor” and you get pages upon pages of articles about the woman who stood up to the federal government to have her marriage recognized—and won! Google images shows her photographed with the president, out celebrities and a collection of images from a documentary about her marriage, Edie and Thea: A Very Long Engagement. A Facebook page dedicated to her has nearly 2,000 “likes.”

She’s the woman credited with overturning the portion of the Defense of Marriage Act preventing recognition of same-sex marriages in the United States. She was the grand marshal of New York City’s 2013 Pride celebration.

Edie Windsor to attend St. Pete Gala

St. Petersburg – Representatives of Equality Florida’s upcoming Greater St. Petersburg Area Gala have let it slip that their guest speaker will be Edith Windsor this year.

While the organization has yet to officially announce her as a speaker, several comments on the event’s Facebook page reference her appearance and attendees have already posted that they “look forward” to meeting her at the May 3 gala.
