Seattle settles lawsuit over abuse claims against gay ex-mayor

SEATTLE (AP) — The City of Seattle has settled a lawsuit filed by a man whose sexual abuse claims effectively ended the political career of former Mayor Ed Murray.

City Attorney Pete Holmes announced late Saturday that the city will pay Delvonn Heckard $150,000 to resolve the lawsuit, which, along with accusations by others, led to Murray’s resignation in September.

LGBT leaders say sex allegation coverage ‘an advance’

NEW YORK (AP) — Among the dozens of prominent Americans entangled in sexual-misconduct cases this year are a modest number of men whose accusers are male. For some LGBT civic leaders, dismay over these cases is mixed with relief and even a trace of pride at how they were addressed.

The relief reflects a general sense that media coverage of these cases — notably those involving actor Kevin Spacey, Metropolitan Opera conductor James Levine and former Seattle Mayor Ed Murray — has been mostly fair and responsible, focused on the alleged misconduct rather than on sexual orientation.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray on Tuesday announced he will resign after a fifth man accused him of sexual molestation.

Murray in a statement said he will step down on Wednesday at 5 p.m. local time. Seattle City Council President Bruce Harrell will become acting mayor.
