Indiana lawmakers to discuss ongoing LGBT rights debate

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indiana state lawmakers plan to convene to discuss what recommendations should be made for the upcoming legislative session regarding rights for LGBT residents.

The meeting Aug. 30 comes after efforts failed last legislative session when the state drew widespread opposition of a religious objections law that critics said amounted to an invitation to discriminate against gay people, the Indianapolis Star reported.

Indiana lawmaker to push for state gay rights protection debate

Indianapolis (AP) — A Democratic lawmaker said April 13 he wanted to force an Indiana House debate over whether to extend protections for gays, lesbians and others under the state’s nondiscrimination laws less than two weeks after the backlash over the religious objections law.

The proposal from Democratic Rep. Ed DeLaney of Indianapolis calls for adding sexual orientation and gender identity to the nondiscrimination sections of numerous state laws, including the Indiana civil rights law covering education, employment, public accommodations and housing.
