Kevin Beckner to be honored at EQFL Tampa Gala

Tampa–Equality Florida will present Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner with the 2015 Voice for Equality Award at the Ninth Annual Tampa Gala for his leadership efforts in helping progress LGBT legislation in Hillsborough County.

Beckner was elected as the first openly gay person to hold office in Hillsborough County in 2008. Beckner, a couple months into holding office, introduced a domestic partner registry to the county, which was shot down by a 5-2 vote.

Cape Coral approves DPR, 1st city in Lee County

Cape Coral – The City of Cape Coral is now the first city in Lee County to approve a domestic parther registry. The DPR passed with a 5-3 vote, joining Punta Gorda as one of the only cities in southwest Florida to have a domestic partner registry.

At the city commission meeting on Nov. 3, Mayor Marni Sawicki and Councilmen Richard Leon, Rick Williams, Derrick Donnell and John Carioscia voted in favor of the registry, while council members Rana Erbrick, Jim Burch and Lenny Nesta voted against the registry.

Hillsborough Commission votes 7-0 to create domestic partnership registry

Tampa – After hearing unanimous support from speakers in favor of a domestic partnership registry in Hillsborough County, the county commission voted 7-0 to move forward in the process of creating a registry for unmarried couples Sept. 17.

The move is a total reversal from a vote held in January 2013, where the board split on the creation of the registry 4-3, and ultimately denied it.

Hillsborough County Commissioners to consider a DPR—again

Tampa – Hillsborough County will get a second chance to do things right. On Sept. 17, the Commission is slated to vote—again—on creating a domestic partnership registry for unmarried couples.

Commissioner Kevin Beckner, a Democrat, has placed the item on the agenda.
