Beautiful, savage, and relentless; those are the words that come to mind watching The Revenant, the newest film by Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman, Babel). The acting is brilliant. The landscape photography is gorgeous. The film makes its point long, long, long before it’s willing to move on.

It’s like its protagonist – driven, focused, and overwhelmingly cruel. Whether The Revenant succeeds depends on how committed you are to a dogged, ferocious film at 2 hours and 40 minutes, as horrifying, bloody, cruddy things keep piling up.

Many viewers will feel the same way after seeing the immigrant romance Brooklyn in the theater. This is a small, alluring valentine of a movie, likely the most charming this year. This intimate love letter is helped by a painterly, careful direction and heartfelt performances by its actors.

Some of us love brainteasers – films that make us discuss “what ifs.” The ponderous and fascinating Ex Machina is one of those movies. You only need to know the barest description of plot to decide whether this story is for you. Revealing too much might lessen the entertainment.

Screenwriter and novelist Alex Garland helms Ex Machina, his directorial debut. He’s always fascinated with the future – he wrote 28 Days Later and adapted the strange Japanese novel Never Let Me Go. Both of them are grim. This is no different. In Ex Machina, he delves into the ethically cloudy world of A.I. – Artificial intelligence.
