Diversity Mural of mosaic hearts dedicated in Orlando

ORLANDO | The Diversity Mural, a rainbow made from more than 700 mosaic hearts, was dedicated to the city of Orlando Sept. 21.

The mural’s mosaic hearts, installed on the side of The Lamp & Shade Fair building at 1336 N. Mills Ave. throughout the month of August and September, were made by people across the U.S. and several other countries throughout the world. To represent diversity, no two hearts in the mural are alike.

Latinx diversity finds outlet on STARZ show ‘Vida’

On Sunday, STARZ breaks down some serious barriers with the premiere of “Vida.” Set on the Eastside of Los Angeles, the series was created by a queer Latinx woman who also serves as showrunner, features a non-binary actor in a lead role and has a writer’s room where the entire staff is Latinx and most of the team is LGBT and/or female-identified.

The series got started when executives at STARZ called Tanya Saracho in for a meeting. Saracho is a Chicago-based writer who has written for “Devious Minds,” “Girls,” “Looking” and “How to Get Away with Murder.” Her plays include “Mala Hierbe” and “Fade,” which was inspired by her experience as a “diversity hire” for a television studio.

A CDC ban on ‘fetus’ and ‘transgender?’ Experts alarmed

NEW YORK (AP) — Health leaders say they are alarmed about a report that officials at the nation’s top public health agency are being told not to use certain words or phrases in official budget documents, including “fetus,” “transgender” and “science-based.”

The health community was reacting to a story in The Washington Post published late Friday citing an anonymous source who said the prohibition was made at a recent meeting of senior budget officials at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The seven words and phrases — “diversity,” “entitlement,” “fetus,” transgender,” “vulnerable,” “evidence-based” and “science-based” — were not to be used in documents that are to be circulated within the federal government and Congress in preparation of the next presidential budget proposal, the paper reported.

Nadine Smith is the force behind most LGBTQ measures that have changed Florida’s societal landscape. Her calm tones weighted by heavy thoughts have come to define the nature of Equality Florida, the organization she formed with Miami’s Stratton Pollitzer 20 years ago. She played rugby at the Air Force academy, she says, but she didn’t know where the score would go thereafter.

Germany’s first openly gay high court judge speaks at University of Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich.- At the University of Michigan’s bicentennial colloquium Jan. 30, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Justice Susanne Baer from Germany’s highest court had a conversation about what universities will look like in the upcoming years, referencing the issue of classism, which Baer said she believes affects the future of universities the most by hindering diversification.

“The moral of class manifests itself differently and is located within different segments of the population,” Baer said. “Money matters but shouldn’t matter as much when it comes to education.”

Tinder introduces more gender options, launches #AllTypesAllSwipes campaign

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Tinder has started giving users the option to select a gender other than man or woman.

The online dating app has announced that its latest update allows users to type a word that describes their gender identity. The West Hollywood, California-based company says in a blog post Nov. 11 that users also can choose to be shown in searches that best reflect that identity.

Billy Bean teaching MLB teams about inclusion in clubhouse

NEW YORK (AP) – Billy Bean has come full circle, throwing out the first pitch for the first Mets Pride Night Aug. 13 against his former San Diego team.

Bean came out as gay after he left the Padres in 1995. Now he’s Major League Baseball’s vice president for social responsibility and inclusion. In the past two years, he’s talked to all 30 MLB ownership groups, various teams and players about struggling with his sexuality during his career and gay and lesbian inclusion in the workplace.

Tennessee lawmakers strip funding from university diversity office

Nashville, Tenn. (AP) – A bill to strip funding from the diversity office at Tennessee’s flagship public university became law without Gov. Bill Haslam’s signature on May 20.

Lawmakers had been angered by the University of Tennessee’s diversity office recommendations to use gender-neutral pronouns for transgender students and to avoid religious-themed holiday parties. So they voted to remove about $446,000 in state funds for the office and instead use the money to pay for minority scholarships.

Vice President Biden: Diverse military with gay soldiers strengthens armed forces

Vice President Joe Biden told the U.S. Military Academy’s class of 2016 on May 21 that greater diversity, including more women and openly gay soldiers, will strengthen the country’s armed forces.

“Having men and women together in the battlefield is an incredible asset, particularly when they’re asked to lead teams in parts of the world with fundamentally different expectations and norms,” Biden said in his speech at a graduation ceremony at Michie Stadium on the West Point grounds along the Hudson River.

Embracing Our Differences nominated for WEDU award

Tampa – A long-running program in Sarasota that encouraged the local community to embrace diversity has been nominated for an award. Embracing Our Differences is a nominee for WEDU’s 2015 Be More Enriched Award. That award acknowledges cultural organizations that contribute to the spirit of adventure, exploration and education in the regional arts scene. Other finalists include Sarasota’s Florida Studio Theatre, Tampa’s Glazer Children’s Museum and Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. The winner will be announced at a luncheon on Feb. 12 in Tampa.

WEDU is West Central Florida’s leading PBS station and public media company reaching 16 counties. Embracing Our Differences is a regular participant in Sarasota Pride and has seen its programs grow significantly over the past few years.

Guest Column: Transgender people need non-trans advocates

One of the things I do for work and am pretty darn passionate about is teaching diversity and inclusion. Whether it’s helping corporate folks understand the different “internal dimensions” of diversity (such as age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or race) and “external dimensions” of diversity (like education, salary, work experience, appearance, and marital status that can change more frequently); I really enjoy helping people see the differences and similarities in each of us. Exploring topics like “stereotyping,” “bias behavior, “ “inclusive communication,” and “silent collusion” in the workplace gives me a sense of purpose and I feel I’m making a small difference toward the greater good of embracing and understanding others not like ourselves. Many businesses understand that solid diversity and inclusion policies are not just the right thing to do but make great business sense, and my role as a corporate educator is to bring that message to the company’s peeps in a memorable and meaningful way.

I’ve had the pleasure of presenting topics related to diversity and inclusion at several conferences both locally and on the national level over the past several years. Some topics were general in nature and could really fit into the broader theme of diversity and inclusion (like “inclusive communication”) while others were more targeted toward a certain areas within the dimensions of diversity (such as “public speaking for the LGBT advocate”).
