Defense: Gay FAMU student’s death a contest, not hazing

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Defense attorneys for four Florida A&M band members charged in a drum major’s death said the state’s anti-hazing law is so vague that what happened on the band bus can be considered a contest, not hazing.

Fifteen former band members were charged with manslaughter and hazing in the November 2011 death of Robert Champion, of Decatur, Georgia. All but the four remaining defendants have had their cases settled.

Target publicly endorses same-sex marriage

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Target Corp. is adding its name to a legal defense of gay marriage, joining other large companies that have taken a stand on same-sex unions.

Target says it signed a court brief backing marriage equality in a pending case. Starbucks, Intel and Apple have publicly backed gay marriage advocates in court cases or ballot issues.

Liberty Counsel wants Pam Bondi to step it up or step down

It looks like anti-gay legal group Liberty Counsel is not pleased with the job Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is doing defending the state’s ban on same-sex marriage.

They put out a press release saying if Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi won’t “present a vigorous defense, she owes it to the voters of Florida to step down and allow someone else to represent the interests of the State.”

California bill would ban ‘gay panic’ defense in slayings

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – A bill making its way through the Legislature would prevent defendants from using a so-called “gay panic” defense to escape murder charges.

AB2501 heads to the Senate after passing the Assembly May 28 on a 42-16 vote.
