Every year, Watermark chooses stand-outs from the LGBTQ community – remarkable individuals who made a mark in the past year, whether through activism, generosity or beating the odds.

2016 has been a difficult year for all of us, both politically and personally, especially considering the marriage victory last year, so we’re looking to honor those who have made the most change, been the most inspiring and helped to make our LGBTQ community that much stronger in the face of adversity.

Babes in Bonnets smashes record, raises $26,000

Thanks in part to some creative planning by host Darcel Stevens, Babes in Bonnets raised the most funds ever at this year’s event.

Held March 28 at Parliament House’s Footlight Theatre, the annual event, where attendees bid on over-the-top bonnets modeled by drag performers, raised $26,000 for the Orlando Youth Alliance. That crushes the goal of $20,000.

David Cox could be Florida’s first openly gay congressman

Daytona – A Daytona man is making a run to be Florida’s first openly gay congressman.

David Cox, director of resources at Bethun-Cookman University, would represent District 6, which covers St. Augustine and Daytona Beach. He said being gay won’t affect his campaign, but his plans for being a voice for Florida in Washington D.C. will.
