PHILADELPHIA (AP) | There wasn’t a crinoline in sight as 850 square dancers at the International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs opened its annual convention last week in a Philadelphia hotel, bringing their best promenades and do-si-dos to a slightly sped-up version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

Correction: There was one crinoline flouncing across the floor, a multi-tiered blue skirt with silver accents and a maroon corset, worn by Ward Lambert of Phoenix. “Certain things never go out of style,” said Lambert, 56, dark chest hair peeking over the fabric of his fitted bodice. “You just have to reinvent them.”

Sean Hayes got the show started on the right foot with a dance number to kick off his guest hosting duties on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on Wednesday.

Hayes began the show with a monologue listing the reasons DeGeneres wasn’t able to appear on the show. His list included that DeGeneres was at Home Depot “where all the lesbians go” down to she was getting “a boob job. And she’s going for the big one, so next time she’s here, watch out front row.”

Flamenco del Sol is pleased to present “Carmen” February 3-4, 2018 at the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center in Sanford, FL. Join us for an extraordinary production showcasing the iconic music of George Bizet layered over Prosper Merimee’s quintessentially Spanish storyline of love, lust, and tragedy told through a rich blend of classical operatic and live flamenco music. A cast of more than thirty will transport our audience back to 19th century Seville with percussive footwork, snapping fans, and thundering castanets, all clothed in sumptuous, period costuming. Join us as we follow Carmen and Don Jose through this timeless and tragic love story.

“To watch each dance number is a joy to the senses,” declared the Orlando Sentinel about last year’s production of “El Amor Brujo.” Come see why Flamenco del Sol productions are among the most anticipated events in Central Florida by critics and audiences alike. Through its unique blend of innovative storytelling, lavish costuming, and passion for flamenco and classical Spanish dance and music for all ages and abilities, Flamenco del Sol is one of Florida’s and the Southeast’s most exciting dance companies.

Dr. Phillips Center Presents Pilobolus: Shadowland

Dr. Phillips Center Members get Pre-Sale Access.

Show date: Saturday, March 18, 2017
Show times: 8 p.m.
Tickets start at $29.00
Walt Disney Theater

Created by famed dance company Pilobolus, Shadowland is a first-of-its-kind performance combining legendary modern dance with high-energy, fast-paced multimedia, merging front-of-screen choreography with projected images and moving screens of different sizes and shapes.

Shadowland tells the story of a teenage girl, longing for her independence, with nowhere for her thoughts to go but to her dreams. She sleeps, only to wake to something incredible lurking behind her bedroom wall – her shadow. Walls spin, darkness swallows the girl, and she’s off on a journey into Shadowland.

Shadowland was conceived in collaboration with Steven Banks, lead writer for the playfully surreal animated series SpongeBob SquarePants, and is propelled by a rhythmic original score by the popular American musician, producer and film composer David Poe. And, it is a signature Pilobolus presentation with the fluid logic of a dream, the grace of an acrobatic dance, the humor of a child, and the heart of a love story; it celebrates the strange and wonderful power of the dark to illuminate us in unexpected and utterly thrilling ways.

Dr. Phillips Center in association with Foundation presents Bebel Gilberto

Show date: Friday, September 14, 2016
Show time: 7:30 p.m.
Tickets start at $25.00.
Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater

World-renowned singer-songwriter Bebel Gilberto, who’s earned multiple Grammy nominations over the course of her career, has captivated fans and earned media acclaim worldwide. With her trademark electronic bossa nova, she has positioned herself as one of the top-selling Brazilian artists in the U.S. since the ‘60s. Gilberto’s penchant for sonically transporting listeners to Brazil, with bright, incandescent bossa nova-infused melodies, lyrics about love, and a lilting performance style has earned her raves for her live performances.

Bebel’s influences are vast and eclectic. In addition to living and breathing all types of Brazilian musical styles as a child, she was exposed to the greats, from Debussy to Prince, Michel Legrand to Billie Holliday, Bjork to Gershwin. She also has a strong love for North American soul; she discovered Donna Summer, Earth Wind and Fire, and Michael Jackson on the dance floor as a budding teenager. “The whole disco thing plays a big role in my heart,” says Bebel, who still loves to dance. Several years after Bebel moved to New York City in 1991 her present day sound of electronic meets Brazilian began to crystallize. “Little by little, I learned what I wanted musically,” says Bebel, who gigged all around the city and collaborated with many artists. “I think there I became a New Yorker—with a Brazilian heart of course!”
