Kansas governor signs ‘religious freedom’ anti-LGBTQ adoption law

Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer has signed anti-LGBTQ adoption legislation making his state the latest to enact a “religious freedom” law enabling taxpayer-funded agencies to deny placement into LGBTQ homes.

Colyer signed the legislation, Senate Bill 284, into law on Friday, according to a local media report. The Washington Blade has placed a call in with Colyer’s office seeking confirmation that he signed the bill.

Oklahoma governor signs first anti-LGBTQ law of 2018

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin signed into law on Friday a “religious freedom” bill enabling taxpayer-funded adoption agencies to deny placement into LGBTQ homes, marking the first time in 2018 a state anti-LGBTQ bill became law.

In a statement Friday, Fallin announced she signed Senate Bill 1140 into law “after many hours of consideration and investigation of Oklahoma’s current practice” amid a groundswell of opposition from LGBTQ rights supporters and child care agencies.

Report: States lack protections for transgender youth

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – Most states lack anti-discrimination policies and staff training needed to protect transgender youth in foster care, juvenile detention facilities and homeless shelters, according to a new report.

There are clear federal standards for the treatment of such youth, but states and communities don’t always follow such rules, said Currey Cook of the civil rights organization Lambda Legal, which helped write the report.
