A Colombian senator on Sunday became the first lesbian and first woman elected mayor of her country’s capital city.

Colombian media reports indicate Sen. Claudia López, who ran on the leftist Green and Alternative Democratic Pole party ticket, won with slightly more than 35 percent of the vote. The Associated Press reported López is the first openly lesbian woman elected mayor of a Latin American capital city.

Indiana mayor talks marriage, millennials

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) | Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg told voters March 23 that his marriage to his husband exists “by the grace of a single vote on the U.S. Supreme Court.”

The South Bend, Indiana, mayor visited South Carolina for the first time since announcing his presidential exploratory committee. The 37-year-old would be the first openly gay presidential nominee from a major political party.

Central Missouri sees spike in HIV diagnoses

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) | Missouri is seeing a dramatic uptick in HIV diagnoses, a trend that is mostly concentrated in the central part of the state, according to health experts.

New HIV diagnoses in Missouri increased by more than 10 percent between 2013 and 2016, which is the most recent state data available. But the increase was much steeper in the 40 central counties that the state considers part of the Central HIV Care Region, with new HIV diagnoses climbing by nearly 170 percent during that same period, the Columbia Missourian reported.

Gay couples in Colombia were already allowed to form civil unions. But the ruling by the Constitutional Court for the first time allows them to wed the same as heterosexual couples.

Colombia high court rules for same-sex couple adoptions

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — In a historic decision, Colombia’s constitutional court opened the door Nov. 4 for same-sex couples to legally adopt children in the conservative South American nation.

In the 6-2 ruling, the court said adoption agencies can’t discriminate against gay, lesbian and transsexual couples during an adoption process.
