Utah bill allows officials to refuse to marry couples

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Utah’s Republican governor has signed a bill allowing government officials to refuse to marry couples, including same-sex couples, for religious reasons.

The measure signed by Gov. Gary Herbert on March 20 requires a county clerk’s office to designate someone to marry all couples if the clerk opts out.

Alabama gay marriage fight echoes states’ rights battles

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore’s judicial building office overlooks Montgomery’s Dexter Avenue, a history-soaked thoroughfare topped by the Alabama Capitol where Jefferson Davis was inaugurated president of the Confederacy and where the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. ended the 1965 march for voting rights.

As gay and lesbian couples left a nearby courthouse clutching marriage licenses last week, Moore, an outspoken critic of gay marriage, was fighting to stop the weddings using a states’ rights argument that conjured up those historical ghosts of slavery, the Civil War and the battle against desegregation.

Florida clerks warned against issuing same-sex marriage licenses

Miami – The association representing Florida’s 67 court clerks warned Dec. 16 that a federal judge’s ruling overturning the state ban on same-sex marriage only applies now in one Panhandle county.

Lawyers for the Florida Association of Court Clerks and Comptrollers said in a statement Dec. 16 that Washington County is the only place named in the federal lawsuit. Clerks in all other counties, according to the association, aren’t bound by U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle’s ruling in August that the gay marriage ban is unconstitutional.
