UCF alum creates Orlando’s first space for LGBTQ Asians

ORLANDO | University of Central Florida alum Rikki Ocampos founded the Orlando Queer and Trans Asian Association, or OQTAA (pronounced “octa”), in April. OQTAA looks to bring together LGBTQ individuals of Asian descent in the Central Florida area. The organization is set to launch July 8.

OQTAA will focus on empowering Asian-Americans who identify has queer and trans through culture and community. “There have always been spaces for queer people and for Asians in Orlando, but none have been designed specifically for the intersection of those identities” Ocampos says.

German EU official criticized over derogatory comments

BERLIN (AP) – Germany’s representative on the European Union’s executive is facing criticism for appearing to make a derogatory reference to Chinese people and mock same-sex marriage.

Guenther Oettinger, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative party, referred to “slanty eyes” in a speech that surfaced on YouTube over the weekend. He also said “the German agenda doesn’t in any way do justice to my expectations of German responsibility,” listing alongside actual initiatives “obligatory same-sex marriage.”

Chinese gay dating app grows to 15 million users

BEIJING (AP) – By day, Ma Baoli was a high-ranking officer in a seaside city police force. By night, he ran a website for gay people to share experiences and on which he spoke under a pseudonym about the pressure he faced as being gay.

After several years, the police force found out and told him he could not run a private website that was earning money from advertisements while serving as a police officer.
