Hillsborough County will not recognize LGBT Pride and History Month; residents demonstrate why diversity education is needed

Commissioner Kevin Beckner appears to be the only member of the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners who believes that LGBT history deserves recognition, as no other commissioner seconded his request to begin a discussion to declare June as LGBT Pride and History Month at the board meeting July 20.

“What I talked about yesterday was not only the importance of passing public policy that supports equality but also the importance that we, as a community, celebrate the diversity within our county,” Beckner says.

Marion County school board votes anti-transgender rules

In a 4-1 vote, the Marion County School Board approved a resolution that requires students and staff to use the restroom that matches their biological sex, regardless of gender identity.

The April 26 meeting was held before a packed room, with overflow attendees watching via a television screen outside. According to Gina Duncan, Equality Florida’s Transgender Inclusion Director, 47 people spoke on the proposal, and most were against it.

Brevard School Board provides an audience for LGBT protections

Brevard’s LGBT activists are feeling more optimistic after a productive meeting with the Brevard County School Board. This is in sharp contrast to the previous school board meeting, where the hate group Liberty Counsel steamrolled over the chances of LGBT protections moving forward.

At odds is a proposal to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the school district’s nondiscrimination policy. Lexi Wright, Space Coast Pride executive director, says when she and other activists attended the board meeting in February, they expected to learn the protections would move forward as promised. Instead, they faced a flood of anti-gay comments from detractors, an unprofessional atmosphere and were told the proposal would move to workshop, which Wright says usually means the end of the discussion.

LGBT protections stall before Brevard School Board, activists regroup

Viera – LGBT activists are getting prepared for another round before the Brevard County School Board following a setback Feb. 23.

“A group of us that have been attempting to update the nondiscrimination policy for the school board to include sexual orientation and gender identity for about a year and a half now were attending that meeting under the belief that it was a formal step that has to be taken, and that the board would, during that meeting, move the policy change along,” President of Space Coast Pride Lexi Wright says.

Sarasota County School Board to discuss trans-inclusive bathroom policy after hearing from community

The Sarasota County School Board will discuss the future of transgender-inclusive bathroom policies at a board workshop Feb. 16.

This comes after a Feb. 2 school board meeting where more than 150 people attended to voice their opinions on the subject.

TIGLFF updates bathroom policy to be trans-inclusive

Tampa – An anti-transgender bill presented in Tallahassee that would limit transgender individuals access to public restrooms has led to a policy change at the Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

According to executive director Margaret Murray, TIGLFF will now require any venue used for screenings of its films or any receptions to provide at least one gender neutral restroom.
