AUSTIN (AP) – The U.S. Justice Department is appealing a federal judge in Texas’ temporarily blocking federal rules that would have expanded medical leave benefits to some gay couples.

In a filing March 31, attorneys sought an April 13 hearing to argue that the preliminary injunction shouldn’t have been issued and “now should be dissolved.”

Justice Thomas objects to court’s signal on gay marriage

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Supreme Court is inappropriately signaling it intends to clear the way for gay marriage across the nation, Justice Clarence Thomas complained Feb. 9 in a stinging dissent to the court’s refusal to block the start of same-sex marriages in Alabama.

Alabama asks Supreme Court to stay same-sex marriage ruling

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama attorney general is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to allow the state to continue to block same-sex marriages until the high court issues a ruling on gay marriage later this year.

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange on Feb. 3 asked the Supreme Court to keep a hold on a district judge’s decision overturning the state’s ban on gay marriage. The filing came after the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refused to issue a stay.

US Supreme Court refuses to block SC same-sex marriages

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – The U.S. Supreme Court on Nov. 20 refused to block gay marriages in South Carolina but Attorney General Alan Wilson said the issue is still not settled.

The court denied Wilson’s request to prevent the marriages while he appeals last week’s decision by a federal judge tossing out the state constitutional ban on gay marriage.

Justice Kennedy blocks gay marriage ruling in Idaho, Nevada

WASHINGTON (AP) – Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy on Oct. 8 temporarily blocked an appeals court ruling that declared gay marriage legal in Idaho and Nevada.

Kennedy’s order came a little more than an hour after Idaho filed an emergency request for an immediate stay and about 10 minutes before the state said that state and county officials would otherwise have been required to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – A popular online safe-search filter is ending its practice of blocking links to mainstream gay and lesbian advocacy groups for users hoping to avoid obscene sites.

For several years, top Web-filtering services have been resolving a security over-reach that conflated gay rights websites with child porn, blocking both from web surfers using safe-search software. Now Symantec, one of a handful of key players in the content-filtering market, is joining the push.
