Harvey Milk Festival holds 10th annual celebration

SARASOTA | The Harvey Milk Festival (HMF) will hold its 10th annual celebration May 9-11, honoring the life and legacy of activist Harvey Milk by fostering the arts as a catalyst for change.

“It feels comforting,” founder and HMF Executive Director Shannon Fortner says of entering the festival’s 10th year. “I feel proud of our community that we’re able to sustain festivities.”

BRADENTON, Fla. | The Manatee Pride Festival held its sixth annual celebration March 16 at the Bradenton Riverwalk to raise awareness and funds for Prism Youth Initiative.

The day’s festivities began with an interfaith service led by the Progressive Clergy of Manatee County. Attendees subsequently perused over 50 new and returning vendors as CAN Community Health offered onsite health screenings and fan favorite entertainers took the stage.

Bradenton | The Manatee Pride Festival held its fifth annual LGBTQ pride event on March 17 at the Bradenton Riverwalk Pavilion.

New and returning vendors surrounded the event’s main stage, allowing attendees the perfect view of the event’s performers. Entertainment included area favorites like Divine AF, an ensemble from The Players Centre for Performing Arts, Beneva Fruitville and Johnny Sparks.

Darwin’s Brewery and Tap Room once again provided the signature Manatee Pride beer, event sponsor CAN Community Health offered free health screenings and Watermark was on hand to help celebrate. You can check out some of our photos below.

5th annual Manatee Pride to coincide with St. Patrick’s Day

Bradenton | The Manatee Pride Festival will hold its fifth annual LGBTQ pride event on March 17 at the Bradenton Riverwalk Pavilion.

“Attendance at Manatee Pride Festival is free and will again be at the Bradenton Riverwalk Pavilion area,” the organization’s press release reads. “Manatee Pride is a fundraiser for Prism Youth Initiative, a private, non-profit community organization that has provided services and a safe and supportive center for LGBTQ Youth in Manatee County since 2010.”

Sarasota OUT, the city’s LGBT directory of events and businesses, will hold the first annual Sarasota OUT Awards on Sunday, Oct. 8 from 8:00 – 10:00 p.m. at the Purple Rhino Lodge.

“I think Sarasota OUT could be the driving force to help make the LGBT community come together,” Sarasota OUT manager Josh Beadle told Watermark in January. It’s a mission he and his team have accomplished: the community voted for the area’s best of the best in September, and will now come together to celebrate the winners.

Five favorite performers kick off Sarasota Pride 2013 with a Showgirl Reunion

Sarasota Pride returns to J.D. Hamel Park in downtown Sarasota on Oct. 19.

To help build excitement, organizers are throwing a “Prelude to Pride” event on Sept. 30 at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Fruitville Rd. Showgirl Reunion is an original comedy featuring five of the area’s most popular entertainers: Matthew McGee, Scott Daniel, Beneva Fruitville, Lindsay Carlton and special guest Joey Panek. It’s a combination of McGee and Daniel’s Scott & Patti Show, but incorporating the stars of Sarasota’s Drag Queen Bingo Bonanza.
