With changes to Orlando’s Big Gay Weekend coming in 2019, we look back on the history of Gay Day

Outside of Pride parades and festivals, one could argue that no other LGBTQ event in the world is as recognizable as the one that occurs on the first Saturday in June every year at the happiest place on Earth.

Gay Day at Disney’s Magic Kingdom has gone through many changes and obstacles in its 28-year history. What began as one day at the park ballooned into multiple days of events from many groups who bring circuit parties, concerts, expos and pool parties every year that encircle the original event and carry the same message of visibility that Gay Day at Magic Kingdom was founded on.

One Magical Weekend holds therapy sessions at B Resort pool parties

Showing as much skin as possible was the uniform of the day for One Magical Weekend’s Therapy pool parties at its host hotel, The B Resort.

The pool parties featured incredible productions from Europe’s hottest LGBTQ event brand, WE Party. They debuted, for the first time in the U.S., We Party: PINK on June 2. The pool was surrounded by hot bodies and pink everything.

GayDayS Inc. moving host hotels, possible date change for 2019

ORLANDO | GayDayS Inc. will be right where you left it at the DoubleTree by Hilton at Sea World for 2018, but the Central Florida event–one of the largest LGBTQ events in the world–will be making a move in 2019.

GayDayS Inc. co-owner Chris Alexander-Manley says that the initial need to move is due to scheduling conflicts at the DoubleTree.

Wet Hot Gay Summer! Orlando’s big gay weekend succeeds despite the weather and a year of mourning

ORLANDO – It was the best of times, it was the wettest of times.

Whether it was a pool party or a thunderstorm, the underlying theme beneath the gray skies of Orlando’s resort area in its big gay weekend occupying June’s first week was one of water falling, often with thunder and lightning included.

For 27 years, GayDayS Inc., One Magical Weekend and Girls in Wonderland have been tourism drivers for the area, growing from simple notions of red shirts at theme parks all the way to huge circuit parties and even bigger profits. In economic development parlance, the annual June event brings hundreds of millions of dollars to the region.
