Same-sex couples began to legally marry in Australia on Tuesday.

SBS News reported Diana and Deanne Ribeiro tied the knot shortly after midnight local time in the Melbourne suburb of Balaclava. The Sydney Morning Herald reported Kylie and Lisa Caro — a lesbian couple who began dating in 2014 and are raising a daughter together — are among the other same-sex couples who exchanged vows on Tuesday.

Australian opposition decides to sink same-sex marriage vote

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) – The Australian opposition on Oct. 10 decided to block government plans for a public but non-binding vote on recognizing same-sex marriage, arguing it would better if the issue was decided in Parliament.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s conservative coalition government needs center-left Labor Party’s support to get enabling legislation through the Senate to hold a national vote on same-sex marriage on Feb. 11.

Poll shows Australians back same-sex marriage but not plebiscite

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) – A majority of Australians support same-sex marriage, an opinion poll on Sept. 28 showed, but they do not back the government’s plan to hold a national vote on whether it should be allowed.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s government argues that its election victory in July gave it a mandate to hold a non-binding national vote known as a plebiscite in February to decide whether same-sex marriage should be legalized.
