Colorado Archbishop calls out Catholic school for supporting student drag show

DENVER (AP) | The Catholic archbishop of Denver called out a local Jesuit-Catholic university’s provost for encouraging faculty to attend a student drag show.

The Denver Post reports Regis University Provost Janet Houser urged teachers to attend the show as a way of supporting LGBTQ students. Houser also suggested they avoid language that reinforces the gender binary — including saying “ladies and gentlemen.”

Condom portrait of Pope Benedict blasted by archbishop

MILWAUKEE (AP) – The Milwaukee Art Museum has handled dozens of complaints from angry Catholics and others over its plans to display a portrait of Pope Benedict that’s made from 17,000 condoms.

Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome Listecki says the museum’s decision to display the art piece called “Eggs Benedict” is insulting and callous. Some patrons have dropped their membership and at least one donor has ended financial support of the museum.

Vatican secretary of state calls Irish gay marriage vote a ‘defeat for humanity’

VATICAN CITY — The Vatican’s secretary of state has called the Irish vote to legalize gay marriage a “defeat for humanity,” evidence of the soul-searching going on in Catholic circles after the predominantly Roman Catholic country overwhelmingly rejected traditional church teaching on marriage.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin said he was saddened by the landslide decision, in which more than 62 per cent of Irish voters said “yes,” despite church teaching that marriage is only between a man and woman.

Archbishop’s memo draws fire from gay rights groups

MIAMI (AP) – Thousands of employees in Miami’s Catholic Archdiocese got a memo from Archbishop Thomas Wenski after judges in Florida lifted the state’s ban on same-sex marriage.

The Miami Herald reports the note sent Jan. 6 quoted from the employee handbook and included a statement from the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops reiterating opposition to same-sex marriage.

San Francisco archbishop spurns appeals to skip marriage rally

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – The Roman Catholic archbishop of San Francisco said June 16 it’s his duty to proclaim “the truth about marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife,” even when those views are unpopular.

The comment by Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone came in response to a coalition of liberal politicians, fellow clergy and gay-rights leaders who have urged him to skip an upcoming March for Marriage event in Washington.
