Transgender boy sues NY state over sex on birth certificate

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) | A transgender teen unable to change the sex listed on his birth certificate sued New York state on Jan. 7, claiming a discriminatory policy is forcing him to rely on a document that inaccurately portrays his identity.

The lawsuit filed in federal court in Albany argues that transgender minors should have the ability to correct their New York state birth certificates, something that minors with documents issued in New York City and some other states can already do. Transgender adults who have not undergone sex reassignment surgery have been able to change the gender listed on their New York state birth certificates since 2014.

Weeks after 2030 HIV pledge, report shows US headway stalled

NEW YORK (AP) | Three weeks after President Donald Trump announced a campaign to end the U.S. HIV epidemic by 2030, new government data show that progress against the disease stalled recently.

After declining for several years, the estimated number of new HIV infections held about steady from 2013 to 2016, the latest available data, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Feb. 27.

Episcopal Church allows same-sex marriage in NY diocese

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) | The Episcopal Church on Jan. 11 cleared the way for same-sex marriages in an upstate New York diocese where they had been barred by a bishop who claimed the church had been “hijacked by the “Gay Rights Agenda.”

The Rev. William Love now faces possible disciplinary action for his November directive barring same-sex marriages in the Albany-based diocese.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) | An Episcopal bishop in Albany, New York, has issued a directive banning same-sex marriages in his diocese, saying the church has been “hijacked by the Gay Rights Agenda.”

The Rev. William Love says in a pastoral letter that Scripture describes same-sex relationships as “sinful.” He also says that “Satan is having a heyday bringing division into the church.”

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Actress Cynthia Nixon blasted Gov. Andrew Cuomo as a “bully” and a “wannabe Republican” Monday during her first visit to Albany since announcing her bid for New York governor.

The “Sex and the City” star and public education advocate criticized the two-term governor for not doing enough to ensure equal opportunities for poor and minority students. She also faulted Cuomo’s effort to combat government corruption and said that while he touts himself as a progressive, he’s governed as a member of what she called Albany’s “old boys’ club.”

Suspect in Albany LGBTQ bar shooting in custody

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – A suspect has been arrested in connection with the Thanksgiving morning shooting at a bar popular with Albany’s LGBTQ community that left one man dead and three wounded.

Police say the suspect was taken into custody Dec. 5 on a charge unrelated to the Nov. 24 shooting at Rocks on Central Avenue. The suspect’s name hasn’t been released.
