Matt Bomer portrays gay superhero in DC series ‘Doom Patrol’

Matt Bomer is one of the traumatized misfit superheroes who ban together on DC Universe’s “Doom Patrol.”

“Doom Patrol” is a spin-off from “Titans,” set soon after the events of that web series. Robotman (Brendan Fraser), Negative Man (Matt Bomer), Elasti-Woman (April Bowlby), Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero) and Cyborg (Joivan Wade) all received their powers through a tramautic event. The Chief (Timothy Dalton) is a doctor who joins them together as the Doom Patrol to fight Mr. Nobody (Alan Tudyk), a living shadow whose power is to suck the sanity out of people.

Screened Out – Trumbo

Bryan Craston, Alan Tudyk, Diane Lane, Helen Mirren, John Goodman, Louis C.K., Michael Stuhlbarg, David James Elliott, Robert Bart, Dean O’Gorman

Bryan Cranston got nominated Best Actor for playing Dalton Trumbo; he is better than this movie. Trumbo was the brilliant screenwriter who was blackballed in the 1950s as a Communist. Trumbo was also better than this, too. Trumbo wrote Spartacus, Papillon, Johnny Got His Gun, and the Oscar winners The Brave One and Roman Holiday.

It’s not just ironic, it’s somewhat sad that this script about a genius scriptwriter swings between good and awkward, blunt, and even boring. Only great acting raises this up.

Screened Out – Big Hero 6

Blammo! Disney Animation has finally tapped into its ownership of Marvel Entertainment. Big Hero 6 is a solid combined effort, a comic superhero origin story for kids and adults alike.

Sure, there are wobbles. This flick still smacks of Disney’s goal to sell merchandise – wait for all the plastic toys! Also, many of the lesser characters don’t get much backstory (maybe they will in later films). However, Big Hero 6 is funny and action packed. More to the point, this film leads with heart. It tells a story about misfits, geeks, and orphans trying to make right in the world, an emotional approach both Marvel and Disney have explored a lot.
