Pop culture has always been ahead of the game when it comes to opening the hearts and minds of society. Long before the majority of the U.S. supported marriage equality, believed LGBTQ rights were human rights and accepted that we were born this way, the LGBTQ community was being acknowledged in movies, music, TV shows, books and more.

HRC kicks off ‘Equality Act’ campaign with Sally Field and her son Sam Greisman

Human Rights Campaign launched its new campaign “Americans for the Equality Act,” a video series which features celebrities who support the Equality Act, on Monday. The proposed bill would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

The video series, filmed by award-winning directors Dustin Lance Black and Paris Barclay, kicked off with actress and LGBTQ advocate Sally Field and her gay son, Sam Greisman, as they have a video conference conversation on why the Equality Act is instrumental in ensuring that the LGBTQ community has equal rights across state lines.

Miley Cyrus to kick off ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ season 11 as guest judge

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” announced some iconic guest judges for season 11, including singer Miley Cyrus who will appear in the season’s premiere episode as a guest judge. LGBTQ entertainers Lena Waithe, Troye Sivan, Wanda Sykes and Adam Rippon are among the list of names who will appear as guest judges this season.

Cyrus made the announcement in a Twitter post and can be heard the the new season’s trailer saying she’s “freaking out” while sitting at the judge’s table.

You’re on thin ice if you think Adam Rippon plans to rest on his laurels.

This year saw the good sport with the winning attitude take home a bronze Winter Olympics team event medal, get the gold (by coming in first on an athletes-only season of “Dancing with the Stars”), and shine, in the face of shade thrown from Donald Trump Jr.’s Twitter account. Having announced last month that his days as a competitive figure skater are over, Rippon is raring to parlay his recent comedic turn on “Will & Grace” into a robust acting portfolio.

Adam Rippon retires from competitive figure skating

Adam Rippon is retiring from competitive figure skating.

Rippon, 29, confirmed to CBS News on Nov. 19 that he won’t be pursuing the career path any further. He already checked off plenty of milestones during the 2018  Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Rippon went on to place 10th in the men’s single skating competition and helped Team USA take home the bronze medal in a team figure skating event. This made him the first out U.S. male athlete to win a medal.

Adam Rippon will be a judge on ‘Dancing with the Stars: Juniors’

Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon will be a judge on the junior edition of “Dancing with the Stars.” Rippon won season 26 of “DWTS,” a shortened athlete edition of the dance competition show, along with his dance partner Jenna Johnson.

“DWTS”  pro alum Valentin Chmerkovskiy and professional choreographer Mandy Moore, known for her work on “La La Land” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” will round out the judging panel.

Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe become first same-sex couple in ESPN’s Body Issue

WNBA star Sue Bird and professional soccer player Megan Rapinoe made history as the first same-sex couple to be featured in ESPN’s Body Issue.

Rapinoe, 32, is the midfielder/winger for the Seattle Reign FC in the National Women’s Soccer League and is on the U.S. women’s national team. She served as guest editor of the Washington Blade’s sports issue in 2014. Bird, 37, is a point guard for the Seattle Storm. The couple was a part of 14 other athletes who all posed nude for the 10th annual issue.

Gus Kenworthy to headline DNC’s annual LGBTQ gala

Olympic freeskier Gus Kenworthy will attend the Democratic National Committee’s 19th annual LGBTQ gala as a special guest on June 25 in New York City.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join the DNC at their LGBTQ Gala this Pride season,” Kenworthy said in a statement. “Over the last year, the Trump-Pence administration has pushed our community to the sidelines, attacking us for who we are and who we love. It’s time we take a stand against this administration by electing representatives this upcoming November who actively support and believe in equality for everyone.”

Adam Rippon and Gus Kenworthy skip Olympic athletes visit to the White House

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump welcomed Team USA Olympic athletes to the White House on Friday, congratulating them on representing the U.S. at the 2018 winter games.

“You made us very proud,” Trump said to the rows of young men and women standing on the White House’s north portico in matching windbreakers. “You overcame setbacks, you powered through obstacles. And I will tell you this, because of your hard work and your sacrifice, you were given the greatest honor in sports: to represent the United States as an Olympic athlete.”
