Brazilian volleyball players dream of attending Gay Games

SAO PAULO | Members of a Sao Paulo-based LGBTIQ volleyball team are hoping to make it to next month’s Gay Games in Paris.

Born a decade ago, Angels Volley began when people who appreciated the sport and wanted to improve their game met. Gradually the group started getting stronger and more LGBTIQ-identified as more people started to get together and bring their experience in volleyball — some of the members played professionally for a while — and gave birth to the team that is now called Angels Volley.

Tom Daley, Dustin Lance Black welcome baby boy

Olympic diver Tom Daley and filmmaker Dustin Lance Black announced via Instagram June 30 that they are the proud parents of their first child, a baby boy named Robert Ray Black-Daley.

Black-Daley was born June 27 via a surrogate. He is named after Daley’s father, Robert, who passed away from a brain tumor seven years ago at the age of 40.

Collin Martin becomes first openly gay, active player in MLS history

Minnesota United midfielder Collin Martin came out via Twitter June 29, making history as the only openly gay, active player in Major League Soccer, and the big five major pro sports leagues.

“Tonight my team, @MNUFC , is having their Pride night. It’s an important night for me — I’ll be announcing that I am an openly gay player in Major League Soccer. #soccerforall,” Martin tweeted.

Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe become first same-sex couple in ESPN’s Body Issue

WNBA star Sue Bird and professional soccer player Megan Rapinoe made history as the first same-sex couple to be featured in ESPN’s Body Issue.

Rapinoe, 32, is the midfielder/winger for the Seattle Reign FC in the National Women’s Soccer League and is on the U.S. women’s national team. She served as guest editor of the Washington Blade’s sports issue in 2014. Bird, 37, is a point guard for the Seattle Storm. The couple was a part of 14 other athletes who all posed nude for the 10th annual issue.

Reese Witherspoon’s media company Hello Sunshine is set to produce a documentary about Martina Navratilova. Journalists Glenn Greenwald and Suzanne Gilbert are also on board to assist in the making of the film.

Variety reports the film will document Navratilova’s life told through the eyes of Greenwald, who considers Navratilova a childhood hero, coming of age during the Ronald Reagan era in Florida.

French soccer commentator suspended for anti-gay comments

PARIS (AP) — A French TV soccer commentator was suspended Friday for anti-gay comments directed at RB Leipzig players following their loss to Marseille in the Europa League quarterfinals.

Denis Balbir, who commented on the match for the W9 channel on Thursday, mocked the Leipzig players’ 5-2 loss at the Stade Velodrome in a video that emerged after the match.

He won a bronze medal at the Winter Olympics earlier this year becoming the first openly gay U.S. male athlete to do so. Rippon also became a headline maker, first calling out Vice President Mike Pence for his anti-LGBTQ views, then doing a media tour as the self-proclaimed new “America’s Sweetheart,” and making huge fans out of everyone from E! News host Justin Sylvester to Sally Field’s son to to another American Sweetheart, Reese Witherspoon. He even got social media buzzing when he appeared on the red carpet of the Academy Awards in a leather harness/tux combo.

Orlando City SC player buys out Orlando screening of ‘Love, Simon’

ORLANDO | Sacha Kljestan, a midfielder for the Orlando City Soccer Club, and his wife bought out the 8:00 p.m. screening of the LGBTQ youth film “Love, Simon” at the Regal Winter Park Village for Thursday, March 29 so fans can see the movie for free.

“We saw ‘Love, Simon’ opening weekend and absolutely loved it. The movie spreads the message of tolerance, acceptance and equality. We were inspired by other people who did this, so we just want to pay it forward and help spread the love to the people of Orlando,” Kljestan wrote on Twitter.
