REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. — A large crowd gathered Saturday to honor the legacy of CAMP Rehoboth co-founder Steve Elkins, who died last year, dedicating a new walkway between Baltimore Avenue and the Convention Center as “Steve Elkins Way.”
Elkins’s husband Murray Archibald was among the speakers, along with Mayor Paul Kuhns, Delaware House Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf, author Fay Jacobs and Commissioners Richard Byrne and Lisa Schlosser.
Jacobs reminded the crowd that many of them wouldn’t be there as visitors or Rehoboth homeowners if not for the efforts of Elkins and Archibald to create a safer, more welcoming environment for LGBTQ people. The two founded CAMP Rehoboth in the 1990s to combat homophobia in the area and went on to successfully advocate for a series of pro-LGBTQ laws in the state, including marriage equality.
The new walkway enables pedestrians to more quickly access Baltimore Avenue from the Convention Center property and is flanked by new signs designating it as Steve Elkins Way, complete with a rainbow design.
The honor for Elkins comes as CAMP Rehoboth, a non-profit community center, seeks a new executive director. A national search is underway. Qualifications include eight to 10 years in non-profit management, financial management experience, and commitment to LGBTQ equality.
