NYC subway announcements go gender-neutral

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is taking a step towards modernizing the New York City subway system by using gender-neutral language in its subway announcements.

Pix11 reports that the gendered words “ladies and gentlemen” will be removed from pre-recorded and live announcements. They will be replaced with gender-neutral words such as “passengers,” “riders” and “everyone.”

MTA is making the effort as part of its NYC Subway Action Plan, which is meant to update the transportation system. In a push for more live updates over pre-recorded messages, conductors will be allowed to give personalized announcements. They will also be allowed to point out landmarks.

The switch is effective immediately.
