Watch: teaser for first mainstream gay teen romance ‘Love, Simon’

The first teaser for gay teen romantic comedy “Love, Simon” has been released.

The film, directed by Greg Berlanti, tells the classic romantic story set in countless high school highways. However, this time the story has a gay twist.

“Everyone deserves a great love story, but for 17-year-old Simon Spier, it’s a little more complicated. He hasn’t told his family or friends that he’s gay, and he doesn’t know the identity of the anonymous classmate that he’s fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing,” reads the film’s synopsis.

Berlanti told Entertainment Weekly that the film will include a typical daydream scene but having the dream feature a gay couple was monumental.

“There’s this one section of the film where Simon imagines this one boy and imagines them kissing underneath the mistletoe at Christmas,” Berlanti says. “In every other major studio film, it’s always the guy and the girl. And there was something so powerful about it being just a guy imagining himself with this other guy in a film again that was going to be marketed and sold as a mainstream romantic comedy.”

The film stars Nick Robinson, Josh Duhamel, Jennifer Garner, Katherine Langford, Logan Miller, Miles Heizer, Keiynan Lonsdale and Colton Haynes.

“Love, Simon” hits theaters on March 16.
