LGBTQ Pride assembly at Virginia Beach school postponed

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) – An LGBTQ Pride assembly scheduled to occur at Cox High School in Virginia Beach has been postponed.

Media outlets report that the assembly, planned by the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance, was scheduled to take place Dec. 5.

The event was to be optional for students. It would have included a question-and-answer panel with students and a speech from Michael Berlucchi, the president of Hampton Roads Pride.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that incoming School Board member Victoria Manning sent an email Dec. 3 to board Chairman Dan Edwards saying, in part, that she doesn’t believe such an event should be held during instructional time.

School spokeswoman Eileen Cox said in a statement that a new event will be held that will be “more inclusive of all groups and students.”
