ABC releases trailer for miniseries on history of LGBTQ rights

The trailer for the ABC miniseries When We Rise has been released and it looks epic.

When We Rise is a chronicled re-telling of the LGBTQ rights movement in the United States, beginning with the Stonewall riots in 1969 and up to present day. The miniseries was created for ABC by the director and screenwriter from 2008’s Harvey Milk biopic Milk, Gus Van Sant and Dustin Lance Black, respectively.

Both Van Sant and Black were nominated for Oscars that year for their work on the film. Black won for Best Adapted Screenplay.

The first episode of the seven-part miniseries will be directed by Van Sant. Black wrote all seven episodes and will direct two of them himself.

The miniseries stars Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker, Rachel Griffiths and Michael Kenneth Williams, and will feature award winning actors Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell, American Horror Story’s Dennis O’Hare and Frasier’s David Hyde Pierce.

When We Rise premiers on ABC in February.
