2016 Orlando Fringe Review: 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche

5 lesbians eating a quiche

5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche
Brown venue, find showtimes
The Susan B. Anthony Society for the sisters of Gertrude Stein are hosting their annual quiche breakfast, and everyone is invited, except for men. If you do identify as a male though, do not worry! An executive board member will greet you as you enter the theater and hand you a nametag for your alternate, sister of Gertrude Stine persona. I was dubbed Arlene.

5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche is a clever show that refuses to let the audience have a breathing break between bouts of laughter. This production, produced by 3E Theatre Company and directed by Mike Carr, is substantial in every aspect.

The small cast of five do a first-rate job at filling the small Brown venue with their boundless energy. In the fashion of a true ensemble show, each actress plays off of and gives to her cast mates; no one outshines the others, which is a considerable feat on the parts of both the director and the cast. It’s almost impossible to single out a specific actress, although the constantly-undermined Ginny (Julie Snyder) does get to highlight her commitment to physical comedy with a ferocious bit of quiche-eating.

Full of euphemisms, the script by Andrew Hobgood and Evan Linder gives the ladies plenty to work with, and the idea to have the house lights on for the majority of show is one that could easily backfire, but works for the setting of a community meeting.

Not too much can be said without giving away some of the most unanticipated plot points, but just know that these ladies could be potentially facing a fate worse than death – eating the last quiche on Earth.

Take it from Arlene; this cult of egg-worshipping “widows” is one that you will regret not joining for an afternoon of brunch, conversation, and possible atomic detonation.
