Man arrested in beating, shooting death of transgender woman

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A suspect has been arrested in the beating and shooting death of a transgender woman in Philadelphia.

Pedro Redding was arraigned Oct. 12 on murder, conspiracy and weapons charges in the Oct. 6 death of Kiesha Jenkins.

The 24-year-old Redding is jailed without bail pending an Oct. 28 preliminary hearing.

A public defender representing Redding could not be immediately reached to comment on the charges.

Police say five to six men surrounded the 22-year-old Jenkins and beat her after she was dropped off in North Philadelphia.

Police say one man pulled out a gun and shot Jenkins twice in the back. They say they believe the motive was robbery rather than a hate crime.

Redding is on probation after pleading guilty last year to aggravated assault and weapons charges.
