Transgender inmate sues to continue hormone treatments

MILWAUKEE (AP) – A transgender Wisconsin prison inmate is suing officials, saying they’re violating her rights by not allowing her to live as a woman.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that 23-year-old Dominique Gulley describes herself as having identified herself as female since she was 8.

Gulley was 15 when she struck and seriously injured a Dane County sheriff’s deputy while driving a stolen car in 2008. After she stole another car in 2010, her probation was revoked and she was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

She says officials won’t allow her to continue the hormone treatments that she began six years before going to prison.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Joy Staab says inmates who report gender identity issues are evaluated by psychology staff and referred for medical treatment as appropriate.
