“Hedwig” closing on Broadway

After more than 500 performances, the Broadway revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch is ending its run, reports The New York Times.

The musical about an East German singer who has a botched sex-change surgery won four Tonys last year, including Best Revival and Best Actor for its star, Neil Patrick Harris. Harris gained rave reviews and performed to sold-out crowds. The show reportedly recouped its budget within 15 weeks.

Even after Harris left, the show played to packed houses with the lead being played by The Book of Mormon’s Andrew Rannells, Dexter’s Michael C. Hall and Glee star Darren Criss.

The most recent star to don the wig and heels is stage and screen actor Taye Diggs. Diggs’ performance was not well-received and ticket sales slumped, leading to the show’s end.

The final performance is scheduled for Sept. 13.
