LGBT flags flying at Montana VA headquarters garner opposition

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — The rainbow-colored pride flag for the LGBT community flying at Montana Veterans Affairs headquarters has sparked some debate.

The Billings Gazette reports the Fort Harrison flags were raised in the beginning of June to honor lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pride month.

Commander of the Disabled Veterans Department of Montana, Joe Parsetich, says someone removed the first flag that was raised outside the director’s office. It’s unclear who took the flag down, but the VA raised it again and put up another one at the medical center.

Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont, says the VA should rather be celebrating PTSD Awareness Month, which is also in June.

Several VA facilities around the country have raised the pride flags.

A VA official says diversity and inclusion are important to the organization.
