Colorado school probing barring gay valedictorian speech but says it wasn’t discrimination

valedictorianLONGMONT, Colorado — The Colorado school that barred a gay valedictorian from coming out during his commencement speech says it will investigate what happened but is defending itself against accusations of discrimination from U.S. Rep. Jared Polis.

The Twin Peaks Charter Academy in Longmont announced the probe late June 2 after Polis wrote to academy and school district officials suggesting one, saying that the school apparently violated Colorado’s anti-discrimination law by barring 18-year-old Evan Young from speaking at the May 16 ceremony.

School board president Kathy DeMatteo says Polis’ letter was “false and inflammatory”. In a letter to Polis, she says the school didn’t discriminate against Young because he is gay and doesn’t believe that anyone’s sexual orientation is appropriate for a commencement address.

She says the investigation will be finished in early July.
