Michigan school revisits its communications after gay marriage email

HILLSDALE, Mich. (AP) – A small private Michigan college is revisiting its communications policies after an email went out about a prayer gathering as the U.S. Supreme Court considers arguments over state bans on gay marriage.

The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports the all-campus email to students, faculty, staff and some alumni was written by a student and distributed by Peter Beckwith, Hillsdale College’s chaplain.

The email said “ugly things are happening in the Supreme Court” and invited recipients to a gathering organized by a student organization. The email said it was a time to pray “for God to give the Justices and the courts wisdom, courage and discernment.”

Provost David M. Whalen said in an email: “The tone and language … did not properly represent our commitment to thoughtful inquiry and civil discussion.”
