Tourism agency responds to religious objection law

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – An Indianapolis tourism agency is boosting its LGBT-friendly content as Indiana receives national criticism for its new religious objections law that opponents say could permit discrimination against gays and lesbians.

A message on the home page of www.visitindy.com says that all are welcome to visit the city, and a separate page highlights some of the businesses that supportive the lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender community.

The campaign is part of an effort to separate Indianapolis from a contentious law signed by Gov. Mike Pence last week and protect the city’s tourism and convention business. One convention announced March 30 it was cancelling its Indianapolis meeting.

Supporters of the law contend discrimination claims are overblown and insist it will keep the government from compelling people to provide services they find objectionable on religious grounds.
