Michigan Civil Rights Commission endorses ordinance covering sexual orientation

Farmington Hills, MI (AP) – Michigan’s civil rights law doesn’t include protections for gay and transgender people, but the Michigan Civil Rights Commission has endorsed a model non-discrimination ordinance that does cover sexual orientation.

The commission approved the text of the ordinance at a meeting March 23 at the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills.

The language says that a no one should be denied “civil rights or be discriminated against” because of a range of characteristics, including gender expression, gender identity and sexual orientation.

The model law also bars bias based on age, disability, education, family status, marriage, national origin, race, religion, sex and weight.

The commission’s vote follows its November resolution urging legislators to add sexual orientation to Michigan’s civil rights law.
