Pope Frances to eat with gay and transgender inmates

Pope Francis will visit the Giuseppe Salvia Detention Center in Poggioreale, located near Naples, on March 21 and eat lunch with around 90 inmates at a local prison.

10 of the inmates will reportedly be gay and transgendered prisoners as well as inmates infected with HIV.

The Pope insisted on stopping for the meal at the detention center, according to Tv2000, an Italian tv network operated by Italy’s Catholic bishops.

Anna Maria Esposito, head of a prison ministry, told Vatican radio the Pope wants to take time to meet each prisoner individually.

The inmates were selected via a lottery system, according to the Vatican Insider website, which consisted of 1,900 inmates.
