Republican voice in short supply on gay marriage

The number of Republicans coming out in support of same sex marriage is few and far between compared to Democrats as the Supreme Court prepares to hear arguments on March 28.

President Barack Obama is the lead Democrat calling on the Supreme Court to extend same sex marriage nationwide. He has been joined by 211 Democrats and independents in Congress. For the GOP, only seven members of Congress have spoken in support.

Governor Charlie Baker of Massachusetts as also thrown his support behind same sex marriage putting it into personal terms.

“My view on this is pretty simple,” said Baker in the Republican brief. “I have a brother who’s gay. He lives in Massachusetts. He’s married.”

Of the Republicans who signed the brief two are from Florida, Rep. Carlos Curbelo and Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

The Supreme Court is reviewing state marriage bans from Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan and Tennessee. Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, who announced his support in 2013 after his son came out as gay, did not sign the brief.

Other well-known Republicans who joined in on the brief are billionaire David Koch, former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and Mary Cheney, daughter to former Vice President Dick Cheney.
