Youth summit to feature Jane Castor

JaneCastorMugTampa – Jane Castor, the Tampa Police Chief, will be the guest speaker at the first-ever Empower Tampa LGBTQ Youth Summit this weekend in Ybor City.

The event will be held at Metro Wellness & Community Centers Ybor location and runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 7.

Empower Tampa is a free event that focuses on empowering students, educators, parents, community and faith-based leaders with knowledge and resources to promote positive outcomes for LGBT and questioning youth. All ages are welcome to attend the event.

Castor will serve as the Keynote Speaker during the free breakfast at 8:30 a.m. with other special guests making an appearance throughout Empower Tampa.

The event consists of four sessions during which attendees can take part in one of three offered workshops in each session.

The first session presents a choice between Creating Safer and More Inclusive Schools, LGBTQ Health Issues and Transgender Employment. Session two features GLSEN’s How to Establish a Gay-Straight Alliance, LGBT People of Color and Human Trafficking. After lunch, session three offers workshops such as Resources for Transgender Youth, Empowering Youth and HIV Prevention and Safe Sex Guidelines. The event wraps up with session four’s Supporting Youth & Families, Love Shouldn’t Hurt and Changing the Game and Ending Homophobia in Sports.

The summit focuses on areas such as improving the school environment, key steps to establishing a GSA in schools, discussions on transgender youth self acceptance, basic HIV prevention, supporting LGBTQ youth as families and making sports a safer environment for gay youth.

Empower Tampa wants the attendees to leave with confidence in their ability to make a difference in the community and in the lives of LGBTQ youth.

A free lunch period breaks the day in half. Two short breaks are scheduled between sessions. Hamburger Mary’s Tampa is sponsoring the free lunch available at the summit and various vendors will be available at the event.
