Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts grand opening

Hundreds of people gathered in the Seneff Arts Plaza for the grand opening of the $514 million Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. In a ceremony emceed by Disney performer Mary Thompson Hunt, several dignitaries and donors gave speeches before a brilliant orange-colored banner with the center’s curvy logo. Speakers included both Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, Dr. Phillips Center chairman Jim Pugh and president Kathy Ramsberger, in addition to representatives from major contributors including Orlando Magic, Walt Disney World, University of Central Florida, and CNL Financial Group.

Orlando Magic CEO Alex Martens echoed the Dr. Phillips Centers inclusive philosophies saying the Magic shared the vision of creating a “structure that is accessible to everyone.”

In closing remarks, Ramsberger gave a glimpse into the programming to be expected stating the Dr. Phillips is Orlando Ballet’s new home and promising that Orlando Philharmonic will one day play there too. The latter contingent upon the completion of stage two of the project, a 1700-seat acoustic hall.

“We have exceeded the all-time record for subscriptions to the Broadway series before we’re open,” Ramsberger told the crowd. Excitement over the opening or proof to naysayers the project is justified? Time will tell.

On Ramsberger’s cue, the orange banner dropped revealing the entrance and star-shaped confetti shot into the air. Attendees had the opportunity to tour the 2-theater complex for the first time.
