Final Fantasy XIV celebrates virtual marriage equality

Marriage equality is happening all over the world, and even in the gaming world. A pride parade was held for the digital citizens of Final Fantasy XIV’s Eorzea to celebrate Square Enix’s decision to allow same-sex marriages for avatars.

The Pixel Pride parade was organized by the Rough Trade Gaming Community, an LGBT gamers group. The inclusion of marriage equality was one of many revisions to the latest installment to the main series of the Final Fantasy franchise.

“People within Eorzea will be able to pledge their eternal love and or friendship in a ceremony of eternal bonding,” announced Final Fantasy XIV’s producer and director Naoki Yoshida at this year’s E3 event. “[T]his will be open to people regardless of race, creed, and gender. Two players…if they want to be together, in Eorzea, they can-through this eternal bonding ceremony.”

A 2007 survey conducted by researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign showed that LGBT gamers make-up 23 percent of the gaming population, playing preferably role-playing games like Final Fantasy.
