Liberty Counsel wants Pam Bondi to step it up or step down

It looks like anti-gay legal group Liberty Counsel is not pleased with the job Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is doing defending the state’s ban on same-sex marriage.

They put out a press release saying if Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi won’t “present a vigorous defense, she owes it to the voters of Florida to step down and allow someone else to represent the interests of the State.”

This statement came from Liberty Counsel Founder Mathew Staver, who believes Liberty Counsel is carrying the weight of defending the Florida Marriage Amendment without much actual representation from Bondi herself. When a lawsuit seeking to overturn Amendment 2, Florida’s ban on gay marriage, was argued in court July 2, Bondi not only did not appear, but she sent a staff attorney to defend the ban and filed a brief in the case only a week before the court date.

“Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is giving only window dressing to the Florida Marriage Amendment,” said Staver in the press release. “I call on Governor Rick Scott to get off the sidelines and appoint an independent counsel who can adequately represent the people of Florida.”
