Star Trek Actor Takei honored for California LGBT Pride Month

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Former “Star Trek” actor George Takei is being recognized by the California Legislature as part of its celebration of LGBT Pride Month.

He was among several people honored June 23 in the Assembly and Senate.

In the Assembly, the introduction for Takei noted his work in improving relations between the U.S. and Japan and serving as a spokesman for gay rights. His role as Mr. Sulu in the 1960s TV show vaulted him to fame.

Takei publicly came out in 2005 when former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage.

Other honorees include Golden State Warriors president Rick Welts and San Diego City Council President Todd Gloria.
