Police investigating attack during a Detroit gay pride event

DETROIT (AP) – Police are investigating a report by a 20-year-old gay man who said he was beaten by five to eight men during a gay pride celebration in downtown Detroit.

Officer Jennifer Moreno says Christin Howard was scheduled to speak June 10 with investigators. She says the attack was reported June 9.

The gay rights group Equality Michigan says in a release that Howard was taking a photo Sunday with a friend along the popular RiverWalk when the men attacked him and used homophobic slurs.

A cellphone video shows Howard struggling with the men.

Howard tells WXYZ-TV that the group starting calling him names and “it went from there.”

Tammara Howard says the men who attacked her son “need to go to jail.”

Motor City Pride was held last weekend along the riverfront.
