Pembroke Pines to make final call on benefits for domestic partners

Pembroke Pines — The City of Pembroke Pines has scheduled the second and final reading for an ordinance that will extend employee benefits to qualifying domestic partners as they are extended to spouses of married employees. The ordinance passed its first reading on May 21, and if approved, will create The Pembroke Pines Domestic Partner Act.

The Commission began discussing domestic partnership benefits for City employees at a workshop Jan. 27. The item was then introduced April 7 by Commissioner Iris Siple at a City Commission meeting.

“I think it means we are truly an inclusive city,” Siple told Watermark about the ordinance. “It means we understand our employees and want to take care of them like they take care of the City. And it’s just the right thing to do. Fair is fair.”

The ordinance was then directed to the City Attorney to be drafted passed its first reading May 21.The second and final reading is scheduled for June 18.
