Overheard in Orlando: Jimmy Fallon to stop by Universal Resort

RBarr vs. Haters
With spotlights aimed to the sky beckoning the Orlando nightlife crowd like moths to the flame, RBarr had a line around the block on their opening night, May 15. With many cheers came a few jeers. Sadly, not everyone was too thrilled there was a new kid in town. A few people took to social media ripping the place apart, saying they were referred to as riff-raff and proceeded with recounts of discriminatory language launched by bar employees. That resulted in a response by the management at RBarr which read “Allow me to apologize for the sour experience you may have had when attending RBARR … Just to clarify that our staff does not use the term “fag”. It is a term full of hate and it’s use is intolerable at our establishment.” RBarr said that any personnel issues it encountered over the weekend were resolved and, despite the opening day hiccups, the crowds continued to patron throughout the weekend.

The woes of Fringe parking
With the Orlando International Fringe Festival growing in attendance every year, you’d think the home of the Fringe and the tenants would welcome the crowds to the typically empty location. But it seems that some locations can be a bit of drama queens! Fringe patrons arrived to a closed parking lot at the Rep (South side off of Princeton) opening weekend. Attendants were met with security guards and a sign that read the parking lot was reserved for people attending the Rep and not the Fringe go-ers watching shows in the two venues located within the same building as the Rep. The parking lot that shared between the Shakespeare Theater (home to most of the venues) and Orlando Museum of Art was pretty tight as well, due to Sunday services held at the OMA. Luckily, signs directed Fringe lovers to park along Mills Ave. and to the hospital’s parking garage about a block away—plus it was free parking over the weekend. Despite the money and attention Fringe brings to Loch Haven Park, one staff member said the tenants seem to fight it rather than to welcome it.

It’s not easy winning Green
After eight grueling episodes on the SyFy Channel’sJim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge, local Orlando Artist Robert Bennett of Kissimmee was the winner of the show’s first season. He has previously worked for Disney Imagineering, but after his big win he recently packed up and moved to Hollywood, Calif., with his partner. Robert’s years of experience and passion for his craft proved Central, Florida has some incredible talent. We’re sure the grand prize of $100,000 the contract to work for the Jim Henson Creature shop certainly help motivate him as well.

Fallin’ for Fallon
Universal Orlando Resort will host the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon as it tapes from June 16-19 with a smörgåsbord of celebrities to join in the fun. The Tonight Show also promises a first look at the brand new Harry Potter Diagon Alley attraction at Universal Studios! Earlier this year, Fallon stood up for LGBT rights by poking fun at ABC’s The Bachelor star Juan Pablo after he made some anti-gay remarks, Fallon had audience members throw hot dogs at an open mouthed cut out of Juan Pablo. Who knows what other hysterical gimmicks this SNL alum has in store for his visit!
